Revision sheet

Recipient kidney transplantation

9 steps, each one the authored title and caption from the interactive animation, with the frame captured from that step. Read it before the case, or print it and work through the steps in order.

Teaching only, not for diagnosis or treatment decisions. The text on this sheet is the animation's own step copy, reproduced verbatim.

Who: the recipient and the match

Recipient kidney transplantation. Step 1: Who: the recipient and the match. Captured frame from the interactive animation.
    • On dialysis or close to it, worked up for the heart, the vessels and the bladder; matched for blood group and tissue type with a negative crossmatch.
    • Immunosuppression before the knife; the right fossa for its longer, shallower vein.
  2. 02

    The kidney on the bench

Recipient kidney transplantation. Step 2: The kidney on the bench. Captured frame from the interactive animation.
    • In slush ice: Gerota's fat trimmed, the vein and artery dissected to their patch, a second artery joined or kept.
    • The ureter left with its golden triangle of fat at the lower pole: its blood supply runs there.
  3. 03

The Gibson incision and the extraperitoneal space

Recipient kidney transplantation. Step 3: The Gibson incision and the extraperitoneal space. Captured frame from the interactive animation.
    • A curved incision in the right lower quadrant, the muscles divided, the peritoneum swept medially; the inferior epigastric vessels divided, the cord preserved in a man.
    • A self-retaining retractor holds the wound.
  4. 04

    The external iliac vessels

Recipient kidney transplantation. Step 4: The external iliac vessels. Captured frame from the interactive animation.
    • Artery and vein exposed from the bifurcation down, the lymphatics over them tied and not cut: lymph that leaks makes the lymphocele that presses on the ureter in a month.
  5. 05

    The venous anastomosis

Recipient kidney transplantation. Step 5: The venous anastomosis. Captured frame from the interactive animation.
    • The kidney into the fossa in its cold jacket.
    • A side-biting clamp on the external iliac vein, a venotomy, and the renal vein end to side with 5-0 or 6-0 in two running halves, the kidney kept cold by slush.
  6. 06

    The arterial anastomosis

Recipient kidney transplantation. Step 6: The arterial anastomosis. Captured frame from the interactive animation.
    • Bulldogs above and below, an arteriotomy punched in the external iliac and the renal artery on its Carrel patch sewn end to side with 6-0.
    • The second warm ischaemia clock runs from the ice coming off.
  7. 07

    Reperfusion

Recipient kidney transplantation. Step 7: Reperfusion. Captured frame from the interactive animation.
    • In the sequence shown, vein clamp off, then distal and proximal arterial clamps: the kidney pinks, firms, the artery pulses to the hilum, and urine comes within minutes.
    • Blue and soft is the vein; pale and flabby is the artery: both are looked at now.
  8. 08

The ureter: Lich-Gregoir over a stent

Recipient kidney transplantation. Step 8: The ureter: Lich-Gregoir over a stent. Captured frame from the interactive animation.
    • The bladder is first filled with saline through the catheter.
    • An extravesical tunnel of detrusor over a spatulated ureter, mucosa to mucosa, over a stent.
    • The ureter cut short: the length that reaches without tension, because the far end has the least blood.
  9. 09

    Closure and the first night

Recipient kidney transplantation. Step 9: Closure and the first night. Captured frame from the interactive animation.
    • The lie checked, a drain in the fossa, closure in layers.
    • Fluids matched to the urine hour by hour, a Doppler, the creatinine falling; nothing wrong is watched, everything wrong is looked at.

Derived from pelvis/KidneyTransplantScene.tsx at build time: every step title and caption above is the authored ProcedureDef text, reproduced verbatim, and this page shares its readable-points renderer with the animation itself. 9 of 9 steps have a captured frame.

Text fingerprint f0384b3498ce0a8d. A caption edit without a re-capture fails the production check, so the sheet and the animation cannot drift apart silently.
